INFLUENZA (FLU) NEWS –Know the facts!

Flu season is in full swing. OISD wants to share some reminders about flu season and facts.

Flu Facts

  • Contagious respiratory virus/illness that infects the nose, throat and lungs
  • Can be very dangerous for children, especially children under 5 years of age and children with certain health problems that are chronic/long-term (diabetes, asthma, disorders of the brain or nervous system.
  • Every year the flu causes many illnesses, hospital stays and tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S.
  • Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets from another person’s cough, sneeze or talk.  A person can also get the flu by touching something that has the flu virus on it and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

Symptoms of the Flu

  • Symptoms start suddenly-fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, bodyaches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Vomiting and diarrhea can occur, but is more common in children than adults.

Protecting yourself from the flu

  • Get a flu vaccine every year; getting vaccinated also protects others
  • Wash hands often. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Remember to  cover your coughs and sneezes
  • People with the flu may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick up to 5-7 days after
  • Keep your child home from school or daycare for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone (without fever reducing medications).  A fever is defined as 100 degrees or higher Fahrenheit (37.8 Celsius)
